Charlie

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 10 years

Charlie is a sweet, stable, slightly stubborn, handsome, and fun-loving dog who’s about 10 years old. This handsome fellow is looking for incredibly kind people who’d like to give him a few more wonderful years of life. Charlie comes from Spain, where he’d been in a shelter for quite some time. He was the favorite among all the female dogs at the shelter, and he has an amazing, natural leadership presence. He truly stands his ground and possesses real leadership qualities—truly beautiful to see, especially at his age. Charlie is a friendly dog; he loves cuddling with you, walks nicely on the leash, enjoys going for walks, is very social with other dogs, and quickly finds contentment. During his time in the Spanish shelter, he watched many of his friends and companions leave—some were younger, others smaller or even prettier—and there was always another departure. When we saw his video, we felt he too deserved a chance at a life where he’s number one and can finally say he has his own family. So Charlie made the journey to the Netherlands, and now we get to help him find a loving home. Charlie is a happy dog—he enjoys a warm bed, a sunny spot, a nice walk, and a good cuddle. Charlie has some arthritis in his hindquarters, which is typical for an older dog. To manage this, he gets a little pain relief every day, and he’s doing just fine! He can happily share his life with another dog, though unfortunately he can’t live with cats, so a home without any feline residents would be perfect for him. We’re not placing Charlie in a young, busy household—this might be a bit too much for him. A quieter, more peaceful environment would suit him much better, and he’d absolutely love it there. If you have grandchildren visiting, that’s no problem at all—Charlie’ll be the first one to come asking for cuddles! You’re warmly invited to meet Charlie in person—then he can show you just how wonderful he really is!

NL·Show original

About Charlie

What life with Charlie looks like

Charlie is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Dierenopvang Koningen in Netherlands.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

Note from the shelter: Prefers quiet homes, not suitable for young/busy families

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Charlie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Charlie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenopvang Koningen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Charlie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Charlie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenopvang Koningen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Charlie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Charlie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenopvang Koningen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Charlie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
