Chico

Male · Senior · 9 years

Chico is a handsome Boxer mix that we took over from another shelter. The "little" man brings a lot of life experience with him. In everyday life, Chico is very attached to people and enjoys attention, closeness, and long cuddle sessions. At the same time, he needs clear rules when interacting with his humans, because without reliable leadership, he likes to take charge himself. He would probably prefer to be a lap dog - even if his size is a hindrance. In training, Chico is cooperative and eager to learn, and he is generally compatible with other dogs - here at the shelter, he runs with a mixed-sex dog group during the day, depending on his excitement level. He quickly views small dogs as toys rather than as equal companions. A home with children, cats, or small animals is not an option for him, as his misdirected prey drive would pose too high a risk here. Squeaky sounds, dynamics, and certain stimuli can trigger uncontrolled hunting behavior in Chico, which is why he wears a reliable muzzle with us. He needs this both when interacting with other dogs and with people. We are looking for a quiet household with stable caregivers who can give him security, structure, and enough space to learn. Relaxation, peace, and clear routines are important to him so that he can show his strengths and continue to develop positively. Those willing to accompany Chico with patience, reliability, and heart will get to know a very special dog.

About Chico

What life with Chico looks like

Chico is a senior dog waiting at Tierheim Lübeck in Lübeck.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Chico, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Chico?: Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Lübeck handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Chico on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Chico if I live in another country?: Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Lübeck will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Chico already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?: Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Chico isn't the right fit?: Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Lübeck early rather than rehoming privately; they know Chico and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?: TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
