Adopt Chico

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Chico came to us as a surrendered dog because his previous owners could no longer keep him due to health reasons. The neutered mixed-breed male dog is house-trained, can be left alone for hours, and is familiar with children, thanks to visitors in the previous family. Chico is a reserved dog, but after a getting-to-know-you phase, he also shows himself to be very clingy and cuddly. He is quite sensitive to noise and so far only dared to go into the garden early in the morning and in the evening when it was quieter outside. With us, he blossoms whenever another dog is by his side. Currently, he shares a room with Odyssey, which works wonderfully, and the two play very well together. At present, we have the impression that it would be a great enrichment for Chico if he could be a second dog in the future. We are now looking for a new home for Chico in a rural area, in a quiet household, preferably with a confident only dog. Whether it's a male or female dog, it doesn't matter to Chico, as he has shown himself to be very compatible with others here. A private garden should be available in the new home. Chico stands about 50 cm tall. Note: If you click on one of the following links, you will be redirected to the corresponding page. There, different privacy policies may apply. About Chico

What life with Chico looks like

Chico is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Julias Tierheim Ahaus in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Chico, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Chico?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Julias Tierheim Ahaus handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Chico on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Chico if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Julias Tierheim Ahaus will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Chico already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Chico isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Julias Tierheim Ahaus early rather than rehoming privately; they know Chico and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
