Chonka

Female · Adult · 6 years

Chonka, a large, gentle and affectionate cat, was passed from her previous home to our shelter. Despite her current weight issues, we are happy to care for her and help her find her forever home. Chonka is a big sweetheart, but unfortunately, she is much too heavy for her size and stature, weighing 6.6kg. We are unsure how she gained so much weight, as unlike some of the other cats in our shelter, Chonka does not always finish her food. In fact, we had to worry about her because she sometimes stopped eating altogether. It seems Chonka is just very sensitive. She is very attached, cuddly and wants a lot of attention from her humans. She struggles with change and needs a quiet and stable home where she can finally settle in. She is not suitable for homes with small children, who would likely stress her out.Chonka is also a great fit for cat beginners: she initially hides in her house, but quickly reveals herself when she receives visitors and then dances around the stroking hands. It is not easy to leave Chonka, because she does not want to let us go. Although she seems easygoing, Chonka's weight is a serious and not to be underestimated issue. She has not had any back problems so far, but to reduce the risk of arthritis, diabetes, and other conditions, she needs to lose weight - slowly and steadily. If cats eat too little or lose weight too quickly, they can develop liver problems, which can be fatal. We are happy to advise you on this and also recommend regular check-ups with the vet.Chonka was previously kept as an outdoor cat and alone, and in the shelter, she makes it clear that she is very suspicious of other cats. We are looking for a quiet home where she can feel like a queen and be happy. She should have access to quiet outdoor space, but it's up to Chonka whether she uses it. She will certainly be a grateful and enchanting housemate.

About Chonka

What life with Chonka looks like

Chonka is a large adult cat waiting at Tierheim Bonn in Bonn.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Chonka, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Chonka?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Bonn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Chonka on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Chonka if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Bonn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Chonka already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Chonka isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Bonn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Chonka and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
