Chulo

Mixed Breed · Male

Chulo is three years old, a true charmer at knee height with a very comfortable weight of around 9 kg. For the first two and a half years of his life, the shiny coal piece with a broad smile was chained next to a warehouse, with two meters of movement between the house wall and the fence. Two meters, on which the young curious male dog could only watch life from a distance, on which he had to eat and then release himself to sleep and dream of a better life. When an animal rescuer became aware of the sad fate of Chulos, she convinced the owner to give up Chulo to give him the chance at a better life with a loving family. After the owner, who showed little interest in Chulo, agreed, the grateful little male dog was also allowed to go into foster care with his rescuer, where he can wait in peace for his permanent home. Chulo is a curious companion and a quick learner. At first, he was a bit overwhelmed by the house, the car, the people taking care of him, the strange sounds from the TV, but a true researcher is not discouraged – and now, just a few weeks later, our cheerful gentleman is a real lover of beach walks, car rides, long cuddles, and cozy movie nights. Chulo is not afraid of strangers, but he takes his time to get to know them and likes to observe new situations from the outside before diving right into the action. Chulo still has a lot to learn and discover. At three years old (as of November 2023), he is still very young, but has already successfully navigated puberty. His size is perfect, not too tall to trip over, but still comfortable to lift, and even in a turbo pace, Chulo will have a hard time knocking someone off their feet. On the lap, his 9 kg are also tolerable over longer periods of time, and when Chulo rolls up into a ball, he has excellent qualities as a warm bottle. THE WINTER IS COMING, so don't hesitate to let us know if you have a spot for our little gentleman.

DE·Show original

About Chulo

What life with Chulo looks like

Chulo is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Chulo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Chulo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Chulo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Chulo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Chulo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Chulo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Chulo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
