Clara und Leo

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 5 years

The two German Shepherds, Clara und Leo, are whelp siblings who have never been apart and are therefore looking for a loving home together. If you're only looking for one dog but have fallen hopelessly in love with a part of our German Shepherd duo, don't scroll past just yet – it's not out of the question to give a home to just one of our Spaniels. Clara und Leo were born in November 2021, so they are still young and full of energy. Both dogs are very active and playful. They love to play together and keep each other entertained, and they also get along well with their fellow residents at the animal shelter. Their personalities are friendly and open, and they have already shown themselves to be more relaxed in their current environment at our friends' place, Dolmen Animal, than they were at the beginning of their stay. At first, Clara und Leo didn't understand what was happening when they were surrendered in December 2025; they were reserved and fearful. But now – just a few weeks later – they are more open and happy. Their previous owner had asked the animal welfare workers to take the dogs. He said that his living circumstances had drastically changed. After a separation, neither partner had the time or desire to take care of the dogs. The owner said that he would only give the two away with great reluctance, but upon taking them in, Clara und Leo appeared very unkempt. They were emaciated, their fur was matted and dirty, and their nails were much too long. Clearly, the two were not as important to their family as they should have been. But despite everything, they have retained their zest for life and are ready for a new beginning. Clara und Leo are vaccinated and microchipped, but not yet neutered (that will be taken care of before travel arrangements). No health issues have been found so far, and the common tests for Mediterranean diseases were negative. As mentioned, both are getting along with other dogs, and living with children is also no problem for Clara und Leo. Whether they get along with cats is not known. Our greatest wish is that Clara und Leo are adopted together, as they are very dependent on each other and give each other support. However, we know that it's not always possible to place two large dogs together. Therefore, they can also be adopted separately in an emergency – as long as they find a loving home where they can live and enjoy their lives. Who will give these wonderful dogs the chance at a new, happy life? Clara und Leo truly deserve to finally experience what a real home looks like, where they are loved and valued.

DE·Show original

About Clara und Leo

What life with Clara und Leo looks like

Clara und Leo is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Clara und Leo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Clara und Leo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Clara und Leo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Clara und Leo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Clara und Leo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Clara und Leo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Clara und Leo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
