Adopt Couscous

Degu · Male · Young · 2 years

The sweet Couscous has had a falling out with his former siblings, so he came to our animal shelter. Here, he shows himself as a very reserved degu. He needs time to get used to a new environment and to build trust. With patient, loving people who give him this space, he can step by step come out of his shell. Since Couscous is more of a shy degu, he is looking for a home with many climbing and hiding possibilities so he can feel fully degu-well. According to his previous owner, he was more of a dominant fellow. Since he doesn't have any other fellow animals here at the moment, we can't assess this. For his new home, Couscous wishes to have a suitable sibling again. It would be ideal if he could join a female.

About Couscous

What life with Couscous looks like

Couscous is a young adult degu animal waiting at Zürcher Tierschutz in Zürich.

Every animal has their own temperament and history. The shelter knows Couscous far better than any listing can convey — ask about daily routine, ideal household, and what kind of adopter they're hoping for.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Couscous, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Couscous?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Zürcher Tierschutz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Couscous on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Couscous if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Zürcher Tierschutz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Couscous already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most animals on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Couscous isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Zürcher Tierschutz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Couscous and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
