Dakota

European Shorthair · Unknown · Senior · 14 years

Gender: Female Cat, neutered Since in our shelter: 1/6/2026 Features: Enjoys occasional walks in the garden. Possibly suitable for indoor living. Gets along with other animals, doesn't necessarily need a second cat, a quiet home, no chaos, stress, or hustle. Character: Cautious, reserved, calm, sensitive Dakota's story is long and troubled, like many street cats. She is almost 15 years old and that borders on a miracle. Because Dakota spent almost her entire life out on the streets. Five years ago, Dakota came to our animal shelter for the first time, already around 10 years old, marked by years of kitten-rearing and being dumped on the streets. A nice lady secured her and brought her with her litter to us. We were able to find good homes for her kittens. Dakota went back to the lady, neutered, where she couldn't go inside but at least had an outdoor shelter and regular food. But as life goes, Dakota grew older and older. An ear infection and other aches plagued the now almost 15-year-old street cat, so we decided, together with Dakota's owner, who unfortunately couldn't bring her inside, to place Dakota in the animal shelter to keep her warm and dry, with medical care, and not to leave her on the street, and to start the effort to find her a home as a companion for the rest of her life. Dakota does not value human affection but is not bothered by it. She prefers to lie in the sun all day on the windowsill or another warm spot. Regular food would be great, otherwise, Dakota is a very contented cat lady. She just wants her peace, security, and a little safety. She doesn't mind other cats but doesn't want any dogs or children around. She is currently healthy and fit for her age. Who would like to give Dakota a few more years of a safe, warm home where she can forget the hardships of being a street cat? She is happy to be a companion but doesn't necessarily want to be cuddled. She just wants to be there without any expectations placed on her. This cat needs outdoor access. Gets along with other dogs.

About Dakota

What life with Dakota looks like

Dakota is a medium-sized senior european shorthair cat waiting at Tierschutz Eutin und Umgebung e.V. in Eutin.

Senior cats are the gentlest house guests: predictable, mostly silent, and grateful for a sunny windowsill. Older cats often have minor dental or kidney issues — keep an eye on water intake and weight. Many sleep eighteen hours a day and want no part of any drama.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dakota, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dakota?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Eutin und Umgebung e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dakota on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dakota if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Eutin und Umgebung e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Dakota already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dakota isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Eutin und Umgebung e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dakota and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
