Darko

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 3 years

Darko – all alone, his name already sounds strong and deep. And just like that, this beautiful, black and tan dog with a herding breed heritage brings character, heart, and a great need for his own place in the world: that’s Darko. He is approximately 3 years old, about 55 cm tall, and weighs around 35 kg. His life began unfortunately not under the best of stars: as a little puppy, he was simply thrown over the fence of a shelter in Greece – a heartless act, but fortunately, he survived and grew up there. Since then, he has lived in this shelter, eagerly waiting for his family. Despite his tough start in life, Darko has developed into a very friendly, playful, and people-oriented dog. He prefers female companions. He loves to play with other dogs – especially with female dogs, which usually goes smoothly. With male dogs, it often depends on their liking. Toward people, he always shows affection and cuddliness. He enjoys every pat and seeks closeness. There should be no cats or other household pets. His shining black fur, watchful gaze, and open nature make him a real looker – and a dog who will be loyal to his person. Through his herding breed heritage, Darko brings a certain independence and alertness. Therefore, we are looking for a home with dog-experienced people, preferably with a securely fenced garden, in a rural area with few environmental distractions. As some situations still sometimes affect him. Who gives this wonderful dog the chance at an appropriate, loving life in security? Darko has been waiting so long – perhaps for exactly you! If interested or with questions, please contact Mr. Schädel by phone. Alternatively, you can send an email with your phone number – we will get back to you!

About Darko

What life with Darko looks like

Darko is a medium-sized young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Düsseldorf in Düsseldorf.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Darko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Darko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Düsseldorf handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Darko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Darko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Düsseldorf will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Darko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Darko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Düsseldorf early rather than rehoming privately; they know Darko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
