Adopt Deacon

Male · Young · 1 year

On November 14, 2025, little Deacon came to us at the animal shelter as a found rabbit—and has unfortunately been waiting in vain for his own home ever since. Over time, EC (Encephalitozoon cuniculi) was diagnosed in him. This is a pathogen carried by many rabbits. Deacon is currently an asymptomatic carrier, meaning the disease has not yet manifested but can be activated under stress. In such cases, the nervous system may be affected, potentially causing symptoms like head tilt or paralysis. It is therefore especially important that Deacon finds a calm, stress-free home. For this reason, we do not place him in households with children. Most importantly to us: Deacon will not be rehomed alone. His partner Arya belongs firmly with him—the two are inseparable, like Yin and Yang. They support each other, constantly lie together, and are deeply attuned to one another. Separating them is out of the question for us. Since the two have waited so long for their chance, we wholeheartedly hope to find them a loving home where they can finally settle in.

About Deacon

What life with Deacon looks like

Deacon is a young adult rabbit waiting at Tierheim Elmshorn in Elmshorn.

Rabbits are social animals — most shelters recommend adopting them in bonded pairs rather than alone. They need fresh hay daily, several hours of out-of-cage time, and rabbit-safe spaces to explore. They live eight to twelve years, longer than many people expect.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Deacon, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Deacon?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Elmshorn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Deacon on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Deacon if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Elmshorn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Deacon already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most rabbits on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Deacon isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Elmshorn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Deacon and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
