Jack

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

Jack is a small dog with a big personality – and with his huge erect ear, he is also visually unmistakable. A real original, indeed! Jack was seized by the veterinary office due to poor keeping and came to our animal shelter in a very bad condition. A severe and painful ear infection had to be treated over weeks. In the meantime, the infection has healed completely. However, a cartilaginous ear remains – which is why Jack only has one erect ear. This is all the more impressive and makes up for his special charm. Despite his ugly past, Jack is a cheerful, self-confident and lively little fellow. He shows a very good social behavior with other dogs. He can engage with his fellow dogs and even form real friendships. He is also friendly to strangers. Jack builds a very close bond with his caregiver and orients himself strongly towards her. In everyday life, Jack proves to be pleasantly uncomplicated. He is very concerned with cleanliness and surprisingly reliable in keeping his kennel clean. Even a few hours alone works well for him. But one thing should be known about Jack: he is not a lap dog. While he loves cuddling, there is a lot of energy in this little body. Jack loves to run, hike and run and has surprisingly a lot of stamina. He wants to experience something and is a great companion for active people. And then there is Jack's little weakness: He needs people who give him security and clear leadership. Because Jack immediately notices if someone on the other end of the leash is insecure. Then he apparently feels personally responsible for regulating the situation – and can get quite excited at the sight of other dogs. Small? Yes. But when it comes to barking, Jack can make a fuss like a big one! People with dog experience who lead clearly, calmly and confidently will probably have much less difficulty with this topic. Jack is quite willing to orient himself towards reliable leadership and accept it. Therefore, we are looking for people who really understand dogs, give him security and at the same time enjoy going through life with a small, active and strong-willed dog. Jack is a very special little fellow: funny, lovable, self-confident, sporty and with a huge ear full of personality. Whoever gets to know him will not forget him so quickly. Jack now wishes for people with dog experience with time and leadership quality, preferably with an existing dog, but he could also be happy as a single dog. Children from 10 years are ok for Jack, whether he is compatible with cats is not known. Jack is looking forward to a date with the right people. Back to our animals Become a sponsor

DE·Show original

About Jack

What life with Jack looks like

Jack is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Koblenz in Koblenz.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Jack, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Jack?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Koblenz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Jack on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Jack if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Koblenz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Jack already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Jack isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Koblenz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Jack and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
