Rocco

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Rocco is a 6-year-old mixed breed dog who is urgently looking for a new home, because his owner unfortunately passed away. Rocco attended dog training classes at a young age, and even knows the basic commands: sit, stay, and stay, and performs them perfectly. We initially described him as a pure "owner's dog", but Rocco continues to surprise us. The male dog is initially suspicious of men and growls. However, with a lot of mental stimulation and a calm, self-assured presence, the dog slowly but surely warms up. Rocco has already had many positive interactions with men, especially through walking. We have come to know Rocco as an extremely kind but somewhat stubborn male dog, who definitely needs an experienced, empathetic but consistent owner. What should future owners know? Leash training with Rocco is still being worked on. At the beginning of the walk, he pulls quite strongly on the leash, so it is very important that future owners can handle the strong male dog and are able to hold him firmly. Once the initial excitement has subsided, it is easy to walk with him. He particularly likes walks in the forest. He still does not want to wear a harness, as he cannot get used to the feeling of being restricted. During walks, he is completely indifferent to pedestrians, strollers, and cyclists. He usually has no problems with small dogs. However, caution is required with large dogs, as he simply does not get along with certain dogs. In his previous home, he did not have a garden, and for the previous owner, who was elderly, walking such a strong dog was difficult. Rocco definitely needs a place as a single dog with a garden. Rocco is a watchful dog and keeps an eye on things at our animal shelter. He barks loudly when people pass by or stand in front of our door.

DE·Show original

Was sollten die zukünftigen Besitzer wissen?

About Rocco

What life with Rocco looks like

Rocco is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Bad Tölz in Bad Tölz.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rocco, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rocco?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Bad Tölz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rocco on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rocco if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Bad Tölz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rocco already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rocco isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Bad Tölz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rocco and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
