Doris

European Shorthair · Female · Adult · 7 years

Doris has been in our animal shelter for quite some time. Her teeth need to be fixed by us soon, but then she would finally be allowed to move out of the animal shelter because she doesn’t really enjoy sharing a room with other fur-covered feet. Her main problem is that she absolutely hates other cats. While her dislike doesn’t go so far as to attack them to the point of them needing to be hospitalized, she growls and hisses at any cat that dares to come within two meters, and yes, she will raise her paw and give a quick swat if they ignore her warning. Unfortunately, visitors often get the wrong impression of her when she appears so tense and grumpy. Doris has absolutely no problem with people. Depending on the day, she may be friendly and will even look forward to playing with people, but often, the game attracts the four-legged roommates and her good mood is gone... For Doris, we are desperately looking for a home without other cats, but with the possibility of roaming freely. Since we cannot completely rule out a bit of stubbornness in her even without other cats, she should probably not be placed with small children, and a little cat experience would be helpful.

DE·Show original

Doris sitzt schon seit längerer Zeit in unserem Tierheim.

About Doris

What life with Doris looks like

Doris is a adult european shorthair cat waiting at Tierheim Darmstadt in Darmstadt.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Doris, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Doris?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Darmstadt handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Doris on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Doris if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Darmstadt will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Doris already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Doris isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Darmstadt early rather than rehoming privately; they know Doris and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
