Dörthe

European Shorthair · Female · Adult · 7 years

housing: Apartment with secure balcony breed: EKH color: black date of birth: 15.04.2019 gender: female neutered: yes in the animal shelter since: 06.01.2026 Dörthe is now doing well with us and has developed into a self-assured lady. She starts to enjoy cuddles with a bit of reserve, but in between, she seems unsure about how to react to this affection. Her reaction is a flying paw, followed immediately by a demand for more cuddles. Her future can-openers should not be afraid of light scratches 🙂 Our dear Dörthe came to us from a friend shelter. Unfortunately, we don't know much about her exact history – we only know that she previously lived alone as a house cat. Therefore, we currently assume that she does not need a second cat and can also feel comfortable as a solo princess. Dörthe is a very shy cat who, understandably, is overwhelmed by the stressful shelter life. Currently, she still doesn't like to be handled and prefers to observe from a safe distance. But those who take the time to notice: Behind her reserve lies a curious soul. She attentively follows what is happening around her and is very interested in her surroundings. We are sure that Dörthe will gradually warm up in a quiet, structured home with patient people. This cat is to be kept indoors only.

About Dörthe

What life with Dörthe looks like

Dörthe is a adult european shorthair cat waiting at Tierheim Velbert in Velbert.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dörthe, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dörthe?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Velbert handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dörthe on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dörthe if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Velbert will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Dörthe already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dörthe isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Velbert early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dörthe and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
