Dzhem (Джем)

Male · Adult · 6 years

Jam, a male around 6 years old, 55 cm at the withers in size, from the single enclosure at shelter "Gorni Bogrov" greets with a friendly attitude and great excitement, allowing to be put on a leash, enthusiastic about what is to come. Outside the kennel he walks eagerly, pulling strongly on the leash forward. When stopping or wanting to change direction, Jam responds with a tense body and tight leash. In a stressful environment, he fails to listen to the signals coming from the person leading him. Jam is definitely a dog that requires appropriate care, as he gives mixed signals in his communication. With other dogs, he passes calmly, showing minimal interest or rather ignores them. With unfamiliar dogs, he approaches without problems, but if he senses tension in the other dog, he is prone to attack. For this reason, leashed walks would be a good start and building healthy relationships with his adopters should be a priority. Enclosed spaces are something new for him, as he reacts with great reluctance to pass through the door. Then the initial situation confuses him somewhat, but upon touch, he responds calmly. One thing we know for sure: visits to the vet with him would be quite calm, as he allows his ears, teeth, eyes to be examined, his paws to be lifted, being covered with a towel, being picked up, pressed, without showing any desire to leave the situation. He stands calmly and does not show in any way signals that indicate that what we are doing is unpleasant to him. At playing with a toy, he reacts with fear, as if he has never seen a ball, but when a new person enters, he reacts calmly and friendly greets him. Our meetings with Jam and the range of signals he gives tell us that perhaps he lived among other dogs and people and their presence is not a problem for him. The only thing he needs from his future adopters is to show him what it means to be a pet dog. At this stage, communication with a leash or just with voice means nothing to him. He finds neither calm nor comfort in a soft tone or gentle petting from a person, since so far he had to deal with life on his own. That is why he mainly relies on himself, without wanting to interact much with a person. Jam needs dedicated adopters who understand and accept the frequent disregard of signals and their attempts to communicate with him. Naturally, this will not last forever. If he receives the patience and understanding he needs, at some point he will feel he can trust and discover the pleasure of being a dog with a home and loving people. Strengths: Energetic, kind, shows tolerance during exams. No problem with same-species under certain circumstances. Weaknesses: Lack of skills and interest to communicate with a person, pulls on the leash. Suitable for: Living in an urban environment, a house with a yard in the suburbs, an apartment, a family with children (over 12 years old). Responsibilities of the adopter: Work with a professional trainer using positive methods and accounting for the stress he has had in his life up to now; if the future adopters have another dog, they must meet with him before making the final decision. Jam's profile was created by Ralitsa Milanova, a certified trainer, with long-term experience in rehabilitation and trauma-informed approach when working with dogs. Supported by Dogs Trust and assistance from the Capital Municipality.

About Dzhem (Джем)

What life with Dzhem (Джем) looks like

Dzhem (Джем) is a large adult dog waiting at Ecoravnovesie Sofia in Sofia.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇬Adopting from Bulgaria

Bulgarian shelters typically include full vet workup, sterilization, and passport. Many coordinate with EU rescue partners for direct transport to adopter cities in Germany, Netherlands, and Austria.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dzhem (Джем), answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dzhem (Джем)?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ecoravnovesie Sofia handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dzhem (Джем) on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dzhem (Джем) if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ecoravnovesie Sofia will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Dzhem (Джем) already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dzhem (Джем) isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ecoravnovesie Sofia early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dzhem (Джем) and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (BG). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
