Elena

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 2 years

Elena, a female dog, has been at the shelter since November 2024. She is estimated to be born around October 2024 and is approximately 50-59 cm tall and weighs around 20-24 kg. Meet Elena in the video! Will you show Elena the beautiful sides of life? Elena and her brothers Stefan and Damon were found as puppies on a field and taken to the shelter. They had to survive on garbage. More information about how the dogs come to the shelter and answers to general questions can be found in our animal welfare FAQ. Elena is a rather shy, sensitive female dog who has made an impressive development over the past two years. While she initially hardly left her box and was very afraid of people, she now goes for walks, allows herself to be harnessed and explores her surroundings curiously outside. Elena is still cautious towards people and can initially react excitedly in the kennel. However, with calm and time, she becomes increasingly more relaxed and ventures closer on her own more and more often. Other dogs give her security, she is currently strongly oriented towards her kennel colleague Eaki. Therefore, we are looking for a quiet, rural and experienced home without children for the dear Elena, which gives her the necessary time and patience to build trust. A confident, social first dog could be very helpful to her. We wish for this furry one people who are aware that animal shelter dogs bring a certain history with them. We can never predict in the shelter how a dog will react to life in Germany. That's why we are looking for people who bring patience, perseverance and benevolence. Already in love? Send us a self-disclosure! Adoption If you are thinking about an adoption, first read through the placement process. All dogs are vaccinated, chipped, dewormed, flea-free and neutered before departure (except for puppies up to 6 months and very old dogs). Dogs older than 1 year are also tested for Mediterranean diseases. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact our placement team.

About Elena

What life with Elena looks like

Elena is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Hunderettung Europa e.V. in Duisburg.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Elena, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Elena?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hunderettung Europa e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Elena on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Elena if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hunderettung Europa e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Elena already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Elena isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hunderettung Europa e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Elena and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
