Elio

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 10 years

Elio, a male dog, has been at the shelter since March 2026. He is estimated to be born in November 2015 and is between 50-59 cm tall and weighs 25-29 kg. Learn more about Elio in the video! **Hundenname**, a shy senior, comes from a Romanian euthanasia center. We explain how dogs end up there and more in our animal welfare FAQ. So far, Elio has been shy at the shelter but is making progress. He sometimes wags his tail when approached and allows petting, especially when he knows a treat is coming. However, he signals when he's had enough and doesn't actively seek contact with caregivers. He enjoys lying in or on his hut and observing the surroundings. Elio has a calm, reserved temperament. He doesn't jump up on crates or bark for attention. He also doesn't react to environmental stimuli. This dog is new at the shelter. Our caregivers take time to get to know and assess each dog. We'll update this profile as we learn more about his character. You can still fill out a self-assessment for this dog. Elio has a cyst in his left kidney, mild heart insufficiency, and spondylosis. He is on diuretics and pimobendan due to his lung condition. Our placement team knows the most about his health. If you have questions, please send us a message. Elio needs a quiet, rural home with experienced people. We are looking for confident people with a gentle touch who can be patient and persistent with this gentle soul. It's important to us that Elios new people understand his age and health development. You can read about what it means to adopt an older dog here. We hope for people who understand that rescue dogs have a story. We can't predict how a dog will react to life in Germany. That's why we are looking for people who are patient, persistent, and benevolent. But one thing is certain: adopting instead of buying not only gives a second chance to an animal but also actively decides against animal suffering - and for a life with a very special companion by your side. In love yet? Send us a self-assessment! Adoption If you are considering adoption, first read the placement process. All dogs are vaccinated, chipped, dewormed, de-fleaed, and neutered (except for puppies up to 6 months and very old dogs) before departure. Dogs older than 1 year are also tested for Mediterranean diseases. If you have questions, please send a message to our placement team.

About Elio

What life with Elio looks like

Elio is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Hunderettung Europa e.V. in Duisburg.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Elio, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Elio?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hunderettung Europa e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Elio on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Elio if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hunderettung Europa e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Elio already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Elio isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hunderettung Europa e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Elio and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
