Elmo

Labrador Retriever · Male · Young · 1 year

over: 🍀 Other dogs: Yes, especially female dogs Other animals: Not known, can be tested Children: Older, stable children Dog experience: Required, training with energetic and inexperienced puppies Specials: Needs safety, compatible with people and most dogs I am Elmo and not only have wonderful, amber eyes, but also a totally lovable💕, sometimes clumsy being. They say I am a true ray of sunshine, with a heart as big as a food bowl! I love people and am friendly with most dogs. Some things are still new to me, but I am open and curious, and with trust in my dog handler, I like to observe various situations (e.g., the creepy horses the other day). I have no problem with cyclists, children, passing cars, stairs, or climbing because I am actually totally chill on walks, which I love. My leash manners are not so bad, but when I get excited in completely new situations, I naturally act puppy-like and forget the other end of the leash for a moment, but then get corrected quite quickly. Since I am so big, one often forgets how young I still am and that I am still gathering new experiences everywhere. Since I still have so much to learn and should, I am super excited about dog training classes and the company of the other students!! I already know the basic commands Sit and Down. Of course, I have a prey drive, but it can be corrected. Sometimes I am allowed to stay over the weekend in a foster home. Here I prove myself to be house-trained, learn that I should not bark at every strange noise, and that my paws do not belong on the table when there is something yummy on it 😉. A consistent "NO" impresses me quickly, and I do not need many attempts to understand that many things are not allowed by you humans that I would actually find quite funny 😉. Since I am incredibly people-oriented, I am currently learning to be alone, which still does not come naturally. At dog encounters, it depends on the sympathy, so I am not for beginners. Nevertheless, I love the contact with good dog and play buddies, and you should definitely allow me to have that so I can continue to develop into a lively and relaxed dog. So, if you are looking for a 65 cm tall puppy to go through thick and thin with and learn the rules of dog life together, then I am your Elmo and I am looking forward to it!. This is a young, adolescent dog.

About Elmo

What life with Elmo looks like

Elmo is a large young adult labrador retriever dog waiting at Tierheim Stuttgart in Stuttgart.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Needs security, must learn to be alone, requires dog school training

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Elmo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Elmo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Stuttgart handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Elmo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Elmo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Stuttgart will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Elmo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Elmo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Stuttgart early rather than rehoming privately; they know Elmo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
