Ernest

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 3 years

Ernest is a beautiful, large and good-natured, 3-year-old dog. He was brought to us after moving from Kashubia to Wrocław. The new situation, related to limited space and the addition of unfamiliar stimuli, caused Ernest to have trouble finding his way in the big city. So far, he hasn't always behaved appropriately when passing cars are present (excessive interest and pulling), which is why we are looking for a home for him outside the city center, ideally on the outskirts, with the possibility of exploring green areas. In his previous home, he supposedly "terrorized" people, but in the animal shelter it is evident that this resulted from a lack of appropriate approach and knowledge regarding dog communication. The guy doesn't always know how to properly express where his boundaries are, which can lead to misunderstandings (both in interactions with people and other dogs). At the moment, he doesn't show any problems with volunteers or people passing by in the animal shelter corridors, as well as on walks. However, there is room for progress and further work. One of Ernest's signature behaviors is "chewing". This applies to leashes, toys, and even hands of people he walks with. It's not about biting, but more about holding and nibbling at an object in order to regulate his emotions. Human awareness in interactions with him is important, as well as not paying attention to the amount of saliva (which is as thick as cream) that he leaves on clothes. As befits a big guy, Ernest is proportionally strong and can pull when something interests him. On the other hand, this big kid responds well to training and makes quick progress. After forming an appropriately strong bond with a person, he can put aside such strongly driven things as chasing a deer or entering water.

PL·Show original

Ernest to przepiękny, duży i pełen pogodnego ducha, 3 letni pies. W poprzednim domu podobno “terroryzował” ludzi, w schronisku widać jednak, że wynikało to z braku odpowiedniego podejścia i wiedzy w temacie psiej komunikacji.

About Ernest

What life with Ernest looks like

Ernest is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko Wrocław in Wrocław.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Needs suburban/rural home, has leash reactivity with cars, mouths objects when excited, requires experienced handler for training

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ernest, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ernest?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Wrocław handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ernest on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ernest if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Wrocław will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ernest already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ernest isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Wrocław early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ernest and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
