Fabio

Labrador Retriever · Male · Senior · 13 years

Labrador Fabio - does this old dog still have a chance? Fabio is already 13 years old and thus a really old Labrador male. He is located in our partner animal shelter in Spain - and his story makes us sad and angry at the same time. Observant children discovered Fabio, who was tied to a tree. Apparently, he had to spend many years of his life there. A life without freedom, without a home of his own and without the proximity of people who give him love. Now Fabio is in the animal shelter and thus finally in safety. And even though he currently lives behind bars, he has probably experienced more freedom here than in all the years before. Fabio is an exceptionally nice, friendly and lovable old dog. He greets people kindly and despite everything that has happened to him, he has not lost his trust. The volunteers at the animal shelter are just about raving about his great character. Of course, Fabio is old, there is nothing to shake about that. He will not live forever. Moreover, as if he had not enough bad luck, he also has leishmaniasis. You can find information on our information page. In the animal shelter he is treated accordingly to keep the disease in check. But precisely because he has had so much bad luck and has we want for him once in his life a real home - we wish for people with a big heart who know how precious the time with an old dog can be. Fabio should not have to die in the animal shelter. He should be able to experience what it's like to have his own bed. A soft blanket, regular meals, walks at his own pace and above all people who love him. People who show him in his old age that his life still has something beautiful to offer. Maybe there are exactly these people. People who take Fabio in not despite his age, but precisely because of his age. Who gives our old Fabio a last home and thus perhaps the most beautiful time of his life? Here you go to Fabio's video

About Fabio

What life with Fabio looks like

Fabio is a large senior labrador retriever dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Fabio, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Fabio?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Fabio on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Fabio if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Fabio already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Fabio isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Fabio and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
