Ferdinand

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 1 year

If you love to walk and hike a lot, then the approximately 9-year-old Ferdinand is perfect as a trainer and companion. He was rescued together with several dogs from the terrible animal shelter Odai in Bucharest and brought to the "Open animal shelter" in Sisterea. No one knows how long he sat isolated in a small cage at Odai. On December 06, 2025, he came to Germany through ITV Grenzenlos and is now living in a foster home in Sehnde. Here, he lives with a male dog and two female dogs that he tolerates, but he would prefer his humans all to himself. He neither needs nor wants other dogs or animals inside nor outside of his home. He is a handsome German Shepherd mix who is very cuddly and clingy. He can be alone for several hours quite well. He is attentive and guards his home. When Ferdinand is in the garden and someone (human or animal) approaches the property boundary, he alerts. He likes every human and enjoys running and enduring long distances regardless of the weather. Therefore, he would be an excellent partner for active people without other pets and without young children. Ferdinand was born according to records in Sisterea at the beginning of 2012. This age is definitely misleading. According to an assessment by a German veterinarian, Ferdinand is actually not older than 9-10 years, healthy, and stands 50 cm tall. At the animal shelter, he was vaccinated, microchipped, and neutered. Prior to his travel arrangements, he received a blood test for heartworms which resulted negative. Please contact either 05071 – 4126 or the foster home at 05138 – 605230 if interested. Video of Ferdinand:

About Ferdinand

What life with Ferdinand looks like

Ferdinand is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at ITV Grenzenlos e.V. in Essel.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ferdinand, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ferdinand?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ITV Grenzenlos e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ferdinand on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ferdinand if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ITV Grenzenlos e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ferdinand already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ferdinand isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ITV Grenzenlos e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ferdinand and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
