Flame

Shetland Sheepdog · Male · Young · 1 year

About FlameFlame is a lovely lad who came to the centre via an inspector after he was found living in squalid conditions along with many other dogs. Due to his past being very restricted, it has left him unsure when to adapting to new situations and surroundings. He is a very sweet natured boy who is learning that there is a whole world out there for him to explore, he is beginning to understand that life can be fun and exciting but it all has to be done at his own pace. Flame is doing exceptionally well since arriving at the centre, he is still a little underweight but doing great. He is slowly getting used to the outside world and is really enjoying going out on his walks. He is nervous of busy roads and loud traffic but is starting to realise it is not that scary. Adopters will need to understand his anxieties and continue with his slow introductions to the world outside. He is very shy and nervous when meeting new people so introductions must be taken at his pace. Once Flame has settled and got to know you, he is such a sweet heart, he really loves attention and getting snuggles. He is a very gentle and calm natured boy who will do well in a calmer quieter home. He will need someone who at home most of the time as he has never been in a home before. Flame is sociable with just about all dogs he has met, he can either be adopted on his own or with another dog. He is much more confident and relaxed when he is with another dog. He will need an adult only home. Adopters will need to meet with the centre's behaviourist before adoption to help with his transition in to a home.

About Flame

What life with Flame looks like

Flame is a young adult shetland sheepdog dog waiting at RSPCA York Animal Home in York.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Flame, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Flame?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. RSPCA York Animal Home handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Flame on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Flame if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — RSPCA York Animal Home will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Flame already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Flame isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with RSPCA York Animal Home early rather than rehoming privately; they know Flame and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
