adoption requirements adoption process Now request this animal! adoption requirements adoption process Our Gandalf has found his people! His story: Zalau, Romania. Gandalf the Gray – this name really fits him almost perfectly. At 53 cm in height and 27 kg, he’s not exactly a runt, and his light-to-dark gray fluffy fur and his gray beard do the rest. But there is one thing our Gandalf unfortunately cannot do. He doesn’t possess the magical abilities of his human counterpart. If that were the case, the handsome male dog with the loyal gaze would certainly not be in this type of kennel, but would be with his family, where he would be loved and cared for. Of course, Gandalf had some luck, as he was rescued from the public shelter where animals are still being killed. But even in the private shelter Zalau, one cannot constantly attend to all the dogs and give them the time they need. And Gandalf loves being stroked and fussed over. At first, he needs some time to open up, and who can blame him? But after a while, he shows himself to be loving and approachable. So he currently always comes to the door of his kennel immediately, so there’s enough space to stroke him. He is a gentle animal and shows himself to be rather quiet and reserved. Gandalf gets along well with other dogs, but his behavior towards cats has not been tested. Unfortunately, he currently cannot tolerate the leash and resists it vehemently. One must assume that Gandalf has had very bad experiences with it. The shelter is working on it, but not always is there enough time for that… For Gandalf, we are now looking for experienced dog owners who will meet him with much patience, affection, and understanding and teach him that the harness and the leash are not something scary, but necessary to live a wonderful dog life with his human family. Gandalf the gray scruffy is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and treated for fleas and has his EU pet passport. Naturally, he also brings his EU pet passport with him. Are you patient and can you put yourself in the shoes of a frightened creature, and would you like to bring Gandalf closer to the magic of the dog-human relationship? Then please contact us. Gandalf would also be very happy about a foster home! Many thanks Liese J.! You gave Gandalf his name. A big thank you also goes to Angelina B. and Annina D., who both took on a monthly sponsorship for Gandalf.

About Gandalf

What life with Gandalf looks like

Gandalf is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. in München.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gandalf, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gandalf?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gandalf on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gandalf if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gandalf already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gandalf isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gandalf and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
