Gerda

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 6 years

Gerda, born 2020 and about 46 cm tall, is a shy and very gentle female dog. The experiences of the past time – her odyssey through being slated for euthanasia, Busca and Campurelu – are still deep in her bones. She is also one of the abandoned dogs we have taken into our care, so that she has a chance at a good life with a family. Gerda is working on herself: by now she can be coaxed out of her protective hut with food, and she is showing small but important steps forward. These small, but very meaningful, steps matter, because they show us that Gerda can develop into a wonderful companion in the right environment, if she is given the time and calm she needs. Visit update August 2026: Hip, hip, hooray – Gerda is becoming brave! Over the past months she has made a truly wonderful development. When Tanja visited her kennel, something happened that would have been hard to imagine not long ago: Gerda did not immediately hide in her hut, but stayed calmly where she was and waited for the treats that Tanja brings her on every visit. To many this may sound like a small thing. For Gerda it is a huge step! It shows us what is really inside her: a dog who would so much like to trust, and who is ready to engage with people when they give her the time. Gerda is fighting her way out of her insecurity bit by bit. But so that she can truly unfold her potential, she urgently needs the chance of a home of her own. An experienced foster placement or an understanding home would be invaluable to her. Please don't let Gerda wait any longer. She has already been waiting so long to finally be seen and to find out how beautiful a dog's life can be. Gerda needs to get the chance now to leave her old life behind and start over. Who will give this special dog the springboard into a new life? Who will show her that trust is worth it? Please get in touch if you would like to help Gerda. She deserves it so much! Gerda currently lives harmoniously in a mixed group of three dogs, where she is calm, social and free of conflict. You can sense that she has a fine, sensitive character that will continue to open up in the right environment. Erda is also a black beauty – elegant, delicate and with a very special expression. Black dogs in particular have a hard time in the

Gerda, geb. About Gerda

What life with Gerda looks like

Gerda is an adult mixed breed dog waiting at Vierbeiner in Not e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gerda, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gerda?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Vierbeiner in Not e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gerda on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gerda if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Vierbeiner in Not e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Gerda already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gerda isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Vierbeiner in Not e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gerda and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
