Giria

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Work at the shelter is not just feeding animals, cleaning, and walking dogs. A large part of our time and energy is spent socializing the animals. Many of the animals that come to us have experienced various traumas, both physical and psychological. Some animals have simply never had any experience with humans. Therefore, often we have to work patiently and for a long time to gain or restore their trust in people. The cat Giria came to us unexpectedly - about a month ago, when the staff arrived at the shelter, they found a box by the gate, and inside was a cat with 6 kittens... Later it turned out that the family brought the plague, but fortunately, the situation is now stabilized, and the mother showed no symptoms. Unfortunately, the cat arrived very timid and distrustful of humans. At first, we allowed her to get used to the new place, then to recover after spaying. Then we started building a friendship with her. Every day we spend time sitting next to her, speaking gently, showing that nothing bad is happening, on the contrary, food appears in the cattery, and additionally, there is always an opportunity to taste some canned food. Progress is very slow. Despite efforts, this cat is hard to open up, maybe she never will, as much as we would like. So far, every time we clean her area, Giria growls, hisses, tries to bite. The little one does not know that we do not want harm, so she defends herself. However, we have a lot of patience and desire for all animals to feel safe, not be afraid, and live comfortably next to humans. Therefore, we will train this cat as much as needed, using positive reinforcement. The joy of earning the trust of an animal that fears everything is unimaginable. Do not dismiss timid, "mean," or cats with behavioral problems. Because there are no bad animals, only misunderstood and suffering ones.

VIDEO –

About Giria

What life with Giria looks like

Giria is a adult mixed breed cat waiting at SOS Gyvūnai in Šalčininkų r. sav..

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

Frequently asked

Adopting Giria, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Giria?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SOS Gyvūnai handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Giria on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Giria if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SOS Gyvūnai will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Giria already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Giria isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SOS Gyvūnai early rather than rehoming privately; they know Giria and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (LT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
