Adopt Gitano

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 2 years

Gender: maleAge: approximately 2 yearsHeight: 54 cm. neutered: yes Curtain up for the handsome Gitano! Gitano is a beautiful male dog with light brown fur and white markings. With his shoulder height of about 54 cm and an approximate weight of 21 kg, the dainty male dog belongs to the medium-sized breeds. Much of Gitano's past history cannot be reported. Gitano was found in the forest. A man was driving his car and his dogs in the mountains of Greece and found Gitano there. As it was already getting dark, he contacted one of our local animal advocates. Gitano was in the middle of nowhere in a forest and had great luck being found. The man asked us to take in the sweet male dog. He was very emaciated, and we don't know if he would have survived there. Therefore, he was brought to the animal shelter that night. The handsome neutered male dog was placed in a foster home in 33142 Büren-Wewelsburg at the beginning of May and is now searching for his family from there. Gitano has already gotten to know everyday sounds and shows no sound sensitivity in the house. He is also house-trained since day one, goes very well on a leash, and can be easily released outside. He is very excited about his daily walks and shows no fear towards other road users. In dog encounters, he behaves calmly and can pass by other dogs or take the approach calmly. Both in Greece and in Germany on the foster home, he shows compatibility and playfulness with other dogs. Therefore, Gitano would be happy with a dog-only home, but this is not a prerequisite. In the presence of people, Gitano is cautious but seeks cuddles and develops further every day. Gitano is looking for dog-experienced people who are willing to give him the time and space he needs until he feels safe and trusting. He is such a wonderful guy and deserves to finally find his family. Children should not live in his new home. Gitano has already been living with the female dog in the foster home alone for a while. Together, they are now learning the dog ABC to prepare him perfectly for his new life. He shows great motivation, is friendly towards people and animals, and is happy to spend time with his trusted people.

About Gitano

What life with Gitano looks like

Gitano is a medium-sized young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Paderborn in Paderborn.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gitano, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gitano?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Paderborn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gitano on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gitano if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Paderborn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gitano already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gitano isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Paderborn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gitano and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
