Gonia

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 9 years

Gonia is a female dog who arrived at our shelter as a result of an intervention. She was taken from a scrap yard where her contact with humans was limited to leaving food on an abandoned property. Such socialization gaps can be very difficult to overcome, but Gonia has shown that she is strong and capable of overcoming her fears. It took us a lot of time for Gonia to feel safe with us. Gradually, isolated from the company of frightened, wild companions, she was breaking through her fears more and more. Currently, she eagerly goes out for walks and loves spending time in the yard. She should be an only pet, as she does not tolerate the presence of other animals. Gonia is still shy and approaches treats with the hand very cautiously. But she has become more confident and interested in human contact. That is why we are looking for guardians who will dedicate time to getting to know and earning her trust. If you are thinking about adopting a dog that needs a safe home where work on its trust and socialization will continue, Gonia is the ideal candidate. Give her a home full of love and safety where she will be able to enjoy life with the caring attention of kind people.

About Gonia

What life with Gonia looks like

Gonia is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko Skałowo in Poland.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gonia, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gonia?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Skałowo handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gonia on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gonia if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Skałowo will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gonia already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gonia isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Skałowo early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gonia and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
