Guapo, die is opgegroeid in Spanje, werd door zijn eigenaren aan het hek van een asiel achter gelaten. Op camerabeelden was te zien hoe hij daar bewust werd neergezet, waarna er een onderzoek is gestart. Toen Guapo in het asiel binnen kwam, was hij niet zichzelf. Hij gromde, was onzeker en probeerde met flink gedrag zijn spanning te verbergen. Dankzij het onderzoek bleek snel waarom hij zo gespannen was: Guapo had zijn leven lang alleen op een balkon gewoond. Zonder afleiding, zonder begeleiding, zonder contact — en daar is hij, begrijpelijk, helemaal van overstuur geraakt. Maar toen Guapo doorhad dat hij veilig was in het asiel, begon hij stop voor stap te ontspannen. Door rust en duidelijke structuur is Guapo inmiddels een heel andere hond. Guapo kan goed overweg met andere honden, speelt graag met de bal en geniet zichtbaar van de aandacht van mensen die hij vertrouwd. Nieuwe mensen moeten hem wel rustig benaderen; Guapo voelt zich het prettigst wanneer hij zelf mag bepalen of hij contact komt maken. Geef je hem die keuze, dan laat hij zijn vriendelijke kant steeds vaker zien. Aan de riem gaat het wandelen al veel beter. Hij is sterk en kan nog trekken, maar met duidelijke begeleiding loopt hij al netjes mee. Guapo heeft als pup niets geleerd en is niet gesocialiseerd met mensen, maar met een beetje geduld en duidelijkheid hij maakt álle stappen die je kunt wensen! Inmiddels is Guapo verhuist vanuit Spanje naar ons asiel in Maasstricht en gaan wij verder trainen totdat hij zijn gouden mandje heeft gevonden. Voor Guapo zoeken we een rustig, ervaren thuis waar hij verder kan groeien. Een plek waar men zijn achtergrond begrijpt, hem duidelijke structuur kan geven en hem helpt ontdekken dat de wereld groter en fijner is dan een balkon.
