Adopt Gust

Male · Adult · 4 years

Gust is a neutered spaniel male dog, born on 04/06/2021. He was surrendered to us with the description that he would be extremely fearful, requiring medication and could bite out of fear. We prepared ourselves for a big challenge... but... Gust has surprised us greatly. We see a confident dog without fear and have not seen any aggression so far. We therefore do not understand why this dog was put on such strong fear medication. Currently, Gust is staying with a foster family where he has developed into a loving, social and energetic dog. He does not take medication, enjoys long walks and loves cuddles. He is also friendly and open towards visitors. Gust shows himself as a cheerful, positive dog who likes to be part of family life. We are looking for a home without cats or small dogs (size cat or smaller), because he tends to chase them due to his hunting instinct. With larger dogs, the interaction goes well. Gust needs a family that understands that structure is important for him: bench training, place rest, clear boundaries around food and resting spots. In addition, he, like the breed is known for, needs a lot of physical and mental challenges to be happy. Spaniels are intelligent, active and sensitive dogs who like to work for and with their owner. They require a consistent but gentle approach and sufficient exercise. Gust still has some difficulty being left alone. At first, he whines a little in the crate. Therefore, being alone must still be gradually built up with patience and guidance. Whoever has the time, space and love to guide Gust, will find a loyal friend for life in him. Past Gust in jouw familie? Dien je adoptieaanvraag in via

About Gust

What life with Gust looks like

Gust is a medium-sized adult dog waiting at Dierenbescherming Mechelen in Mechelen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gust, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gust?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenbescherming Mechelen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gust on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gust if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenbescherming Mechelen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gust already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gust isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenbescherming Mechelen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gust and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
