Hachiko

Akita · Male · Senior · 9 years

Hachiko was dropped off with us as the owners unfortunately no longer had the necessary time for him. The sweet guy can become a really good companion if one knows this breed well. He is typically initially mistrustful of strangers and initially wards them off. Nevertheless, with a lot of patience, one can quickly win his trust, and he is becoming better every day. We initially had trouble even putting a leash and harness on him. However, he is rather easy to distract with food, and now putting the harness on is no longer a problem, and he is also happy when he can go out. Training the harness is done daily, but he still does not find it as enjoyable. It seems as though he is not yet comfortable with certain body touches. However, we have not known him as a caregiver for long. While he is leash-trained for walks, he can also be a bit stubborn when he wants to go to certain spots. This will also be a simple matter of training with a primary caregiver. During encounters with other dogs, he sometimes raises his hackles and stares at the other dogs. However, passing by is not a problem. We have not yet practiced direct dog interactions with him, which should be done. Since he has a strong protective instinct, some time must be invested in this. In his new home, Hachiko should have one or more trusted people who can train him intensively. Of course, an entire family would be ideal, but the children should be older, as he has also bitten in the past when feeling threatened or insecure. Although he clearly shows his limits through growling, if not handled correctly, it can become dangerous for children. If you are interested in this great dog, please contact us at the animal shelter Leverkusen for a meet-and-greet appointment. This animal was surrendered to the shelter.

About Hachiko

What life with Hachiko looks like

Hachiko is a senior akita dog waiting at Tierheim Wuppertal in Wuppertal.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hachiko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hachiko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Wuppertal handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hachiko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hachiko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Wuppertal will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hachiko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hachiko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Wuppertal early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hachiko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
