Adopt Helga

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 8 years

Helga is now 8 years old and looking for a very special forever home. This beautiful French Bulldog arrived at the centre feeling frightened, confused and completely let down. Sadly, Helga is another victim of being abandoned and passed off as a “fake stray” — discarded by the very people who were meant to love and protect her. On top of that, Helga has also suffered the effects of irresponsible breeding. She has angular limb deformities in her hind legs which sadly cannot be corrected surgically. The good news is that she is currently responding really well to daily pain relief and continues to enjoy her walks, cuddles and day-to-day life. Her future adopters will need to be committed to maintaining her ongoing veterinary care and management. When Helga first arrived, she found kennel life incredibly overwhelming and stressful. Since moving into a loving foster home, she has absolutely blossomed. Her foster carer has worked tirelessly with her and is so passionate about helping her find the perfect match — and honestly, the transformation has been incredible. Helga has learnt so much in foster and is a completely different dog from the one who first arrived. Once she trusts you, her funny, loving personality shines through. She adores cuddles (or cwtches, as we like to say ), rolls around with happiness, plays with her toys indoors and thrives on routine. The outside world can still feel a little overwhelming for Helga at times, especially around other dogs, but she is making fantastic progress with training and guidance. She’s small, food motivated and eager to learn. She is non-reactive to traffic, cyclists and people, and she settles brilliantly when left alone for periods of time. Helga also requires daily ear cleaning and ongoing ear drops. Thanks to the patience and dedication of her foster carer, she has responded incredibly well to counter-conditioning based training and is now able to tolerate her ear drops on most days without worry. Her foster has put so much work into helping Helga feel safe and comfortable with handling, and it has made such a difference to her confidence and wellbeing. Helga is looking for a quiet, adult-only, pet-free home where she can continue to feel safe, understood and loved. A busy household would simply be too much for her sensitive soul. If you are looking for a loyal companion who will reward your patience with endless affection, laughter and sofa cuddles, please consider giving Helga the forever home she truly deserves. Helga has come so far already. Now all she needs is someone willing to give her the happy ending she’s waited so patiently for.

About Helga

What life with Helga looks like

Helga is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Cardiff Dogs Home.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Helga, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Helga?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Cardiff Dogs Home handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Helga on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Helga if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Cardiff Dogs Home will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Helga already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Helga isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Cardiff Dogs Home early rather than rehoming privately; they know Helga and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
