Helge

Havanese · Male · Puppy · 5 months

Helge is a lively, cheerful and confident little fellow who still has some learning to do. He is not yet fully house trained, and needs work on leash manners and basic obedience. As he is currently in the process of teething, he likes to chew on anything that gets in his way. Helge generally gets along well with other dogs, but he can be a bit of a goofball and sometimes a bit too pushy. He needs to learn more about other dogs' boundaries. A confident first-time dog owner would be great, but it's not a requirement. Helge cannot be left alone at the moment and needs to be slowly built up to it. He is also getting better at car travel, but it still causes him some excitement. He occasionally whines and starts barking if he has to wait alone in the car. We have had mixed experiences with children. Helge can really like kids, but he needs a calm and respectful approach. That's why children in the new home should be a bit older and know how to handle dogs. If children leave him alone and don't bother him, he can get used to them. But if children run up to him, stare at him for a long time or approach him too roughly, Helge becomes uncertain, barks at them and pulls back. Patience, understanding and a respectful approach are important here. Helge still needs to get used to regular grooming. We are looking for people with time, patience and loving consistency who enjoy teaching a young dog the basics of being a dog. He is definitely not a "finished" dog yet, but a young fellow with a lot of energy who needs guidance and clear, fair rules. He brings a lot of charm, joie de vivre and potential with him. We wish for Helge a home where he can feel welcome, build trust and grow and learn with his people. If you are interested or have questions about this dog, please send us an email with your phone number and a short description of yourself.

DE·Show original

About Helge

What life with Helge looks like

Helge is a small puppy havanese dog waiting at Tierheim Elmshorn in Elmshorn.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Helge, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Helge?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Elmshorn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Helge on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Helge if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Elmshorn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Helge already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Helge isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Elmshorn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Helge and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
