Hering

Male · Adult · 4 years

Attention cat cuddlers—here comes Herring 😊 Herring was simply abandoned when it became clear that he’s not your average tomcat. Luckily, we were able to uncover some information about his background. As a cat with ataxia, Herring has lived with balance issues and impaired coordination ever since birth—but these challenges don’t really bother him much. He happily strolls and rolls around the house, effortlessly climbing his scratching post to keep a close eye on everything happening outside his enclosure. Being an extremely affectionate and people-oriented cat, Herring loves all kinds of attention and comes rushing over with loud meows as soon as you enter the room, eager to greet you. He especially loves lounging across the laps of his caregivers while they scratch his back. During these moments, he purrs, kneads, and makes all sorts of contented noises. Brushing, nail trimming, ear cleaning—all these tasks are no problem for him—as long as there’s plenty of cuddling going on! 😉 Herring is curious and loves being the center of attention. Still, in unfamiliar situations or when exposed to loud noises, he can sometimes become quite skittish. With other cats, he’s very picky—whether he’ll get along with a fellow feline or prefer to run away entirely depends on whether he likes them or not. Dogs? Definitely not his thing. Unfortunately, Herring is not litter-trained. Although he can deliberately control where he defecates and urinates, he rarely uses the litter boxes provided for him. Instead, he usually picks out a specific spot—often a cozy blanket or basket—where he consistently does his business for a while before suddenly changing his behavior again. Even trying different types of litter, including soil or sand, hasn’t helped, so it seems likely that Herring will remain untrained even in his new home. Because of his strong bond with people, his ataxia, and his lack of litter training, we’re looking for understanding and patient owners who have plenty of time to care for this sweet boy and spend lots of quality time with him. Herring will only be rehomed indoors, preferably as an only pet without other animals. Understanding older children are fine, too.

About Hering

What life with Hering looks like

Hering is a adult cat waiting at Tierheim Nürnberg in Nuremberg.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hering, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hering?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Nürnberg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hering on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hering if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Nürnberg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hering already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hering isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Nürnberg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hering and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
