Hermann

Labrador Retriever · Male · 13 months

A friendly, somewhat shy, untrained but teachable teenager with an irresistible dog's gaze: Hermann. Increasingly, animal welfare organizations in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district are being confronted with cases of animal hoarding. These two words, which mean animal collecting in German, describe the keeping of a large number of pets that are not or no longer cared for in an appropriate manner with food and water. Their accommodation is usually inadequate in terms of space and hygiene, and the necessary veterinary care is lacking. Because the people affected lack insight. They do not understand what they are actually doing, and do not recognize the inadequate conditions and suffering of the animals. In the spring, a large number of Labrador mixes had to be secured by the veterinary office and distributed to the surrounding animal shelters. Hermann, who now lives in the Rohrer Berg animal shelter in Meiningen, is one of them. A sleek black, rather slender, uncastrated male. In his about twelve months of life, he has unfortunately learned very little, which is why new people and environmental stimuli often seem suspicious to him. However, he has already won over the hearts of employees and dog walkers in the animal shelter. With their help, he has learned that it can be fun to walk on a leash, and human hands are great for stroking or playing ball. Treats are also gladly accepted. The shy Hermann, who hits the heart with his gaze, is slowly thawing and can even be pushy with familiar people at times. It is all the more important now that he gets his own home. That people fall in love with his gaze, but also teach the young dog rules. Since Hermann knows and likes living with other dogs, he can also be placed as a second dog. He does not know cats and small animals from close up. Hermann is a young friendly dog who can become a companion for single people, couples, but also families with children. He just needs a real chance and time and patience in the acclimatization phase. Hermann is looking forward to a call from interested parties at the Rohrer Berg animal shelter staff to make an appointment under the telephone number .

About Hermann

What life with Hermann looks like

Hermann is a large adult labrador retriever dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Meiningen in Meiningen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hermann, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hermann?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Meiningen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hermann on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hermann if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Meiningen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Hermann already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hermann isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Meiningen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hermann and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
