Adopt Hestis

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

To improve Hestis’s chances of adoption, he was allowed to move into the Hundezentrum Hessen at the beginning of December 2025. He is receiving training there—read for yourself how wonderfully he’s progressing! Of course, he is still searching for his people. Update on Hestis: A rough diamond seeking his humans Hestis, our charming male Bracken-mixed-breed dog, is waiting at the Hundezentrum Hessen for a new chance and has undergone impressive development over recent months. Anyone looking for a loyal companion and ready to provide clear leadership will find in Hestis a wonderful friend for life. *Great progress at the Hundezentrum* First and foremost: Hestis’s behavior toward strangers—which posed a major challenge in his past—has fundamentally improved here with us. He has learned to build trust once he senses that his person confidently handles situations. Nowadays, he shows himself to be a very friendly and approachable dog. The key to his heart and exemplary behavior lies in *clear rules and structure at home*. When these are consistently and fairly established, Hestis embraces them readily and is wonderfully easy to lead. Calm and safe interactions then become completely unproblematic. He needs to feel that he can relinquish responsibility—only then can he relax and reveal his true, endearing nature. *What Hestis brings to his new home:* * *A fine character:* Once he knows his people, he is extremely obedient, playful, and incredibly cuddly. * *Good manners:* He is fully house-trained, travels comfortably in the car, and walks nicely on leash. * *Dog-friendly:* He continues to get along very well with other dogs. * *Independent:* He can easily be left alone for a few hours when needed. * *Active yet relaxed:* Hestis enjoys long walks through nature just as much as quiet hours in his cozy bed. *What Hestis needs for his happiness:* We are seeking dog-experienced people who can provide him with the necessary sense of security. His past history—including a biting incident—stemmed from insecurity and the feeling that he had to take control for his humans. It is therefore crucial to understand that his positive behavior here at the Hundezentrum is the result of consistent work. In a new home, he may initially revert to old patterns. His new owners must therefore be prepared to patiently rebuild these foundations with him from day one and set clear boundaries right away. Hestis will not be rehomed into a household with children. Placement as a confident only dog would be conceivable. If you can offer a calm yet active home and possess the necessary experience and patience to show Hestis how wonderful a dog’s life can be without bearing responsibility, we look forward to hearing from you. Multiple meet-and-greets are required for a successful placement. About Hestis

What life with Hestis looks like

Hestis is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Julias Tierheim Ahaus in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hestis, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hestis?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Julias Tierheim Ahaus handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hestis on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hestis if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Julias Tierheim Ahaus will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hestis already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hestis isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Julias Tierheim Ahaus early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hestis and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
