HOMER

Mixed Breed · Unknown

HOMER was rescued in October 2024. He was wandering around the villages then, emaciated, exhausted, dragging a heavy, long chain. All signs point to the fact that he escaped from where he was tied and set out to find something better than the life he had known. Since then, he has been waiting for a home. For a very long time. This is not a dog for everyone—and we want to say this honestly. HOMER is a dog with a strong territorial instinct and the character of a true guardian. He watches over his territory, does not let strangers onto his property, is vigilant, and very aware of his surroundings. For inexperienced people, he may inspire respect and fear. But the truth is that this is one of his greatest assets. HOMER is not an unstable or aggressive dog. On the contrary, he is an exceptionally well-balanced, wise, and very loyal dog. He needs time to trust a new human. He will not jump with joy to greet every stranger from the start. That is his nature. But once he gets to know and accepts someone, he becomes a wonderful companion. His relationship with our volunteers today shows this. He now walks with them on walks, allows himself to be petted, and calmly walks on a leash outside the property. He knows that they come with good intentions. He is capable of building relationships—but he does so wisely, not impulsively. Despite his mature age, HOMER still has a lot of life in him. He loves toys, adores running after a ball, and can happily bound like a much younger dog. He gets along very well with puppies, being even gentlemanly towards them. We are looking for a home for him that is aware, calm, and responsible. Someone who understands his psyche and appreciates how exceptional he is as a dog. Because HOMER really has a huge heart—but he doesn't give it away to just anyone. HOMER is in the fund-supported shelter in Wymysłowie.

PL·Show original

Potrzebuje czasu, by zaufać nowemu człowiekowi. Homer przebywa w azylu fundacyjnym w Wymysłowie. About HOMER

What life with HOMER looks like

HOMER is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Gnieźnie in Gniezno.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting HOMER, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about HOMER?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Gnieźnie handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw HOMER on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt HOMER if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Gnieźnie will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is HOMER already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if HOMER isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Gnieźnie early rather than rehoming privately; they know HOMER and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
