Hugo

Mixed Breed · Male

Unfortunately, Hugo tests positive for leukemia and toxoplasmosis ❤️ This dream cat is looking for special people with big hearts ❤️ Actually, Hugo sounds simply perfect: He’s incredibly sweet, cuddly, playful, talkative, and gets along well with other cats too. A truly wonderful little feline who is guaranteed to bring his humans lots of joy. Yet Hugo carries a health burden: He tested positive for feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and also tested positive for toxoplasmosis. He’s currently undergoing treatment for toxoplasmosis. The leukemia infection, however, will remain with him for life. It cannot be cured, but any symptoms or secondary illnesses that may arise can be treated. Therefore, Hugo can only be rehomed to another cat who is also FeLV-positive—or as an only cat in a home without other cats. Perhaps there’s already an FeLV-positive cat out there who would be delighted to have such a friendly, playful, and cuddly companion like Hugo? Of course, we’ll provide interested parties with detailed advice on proper care and Hugo’s medical conditions. One thing is certain: this wonderful tomcat doesn’t deserve to spend his life in an animal shelter. We sincerely hope that Hugo will find a loving, calm, and as stress-free a home as possible—with people who don’t just see his diagnosis, but above all recognize the wonderful cat he truly is. 🏠 Who will give Hugo his chance? Please help us find the right people for him and share his post—especially in groups for FeLV-positive cats. ❤️ FACT SHEET In the shelter since June 30, 2026 Age approx. 24 months Breed EHK – gray tabby with white Gender male, neutered Reason for surrender Found cat from Westerngrund, second cat; possibly to be housed with another FeLV-positive cat Housing Indoor cat, possibly with supervised outdoor access Share this page

About Hugo

What life with Hugo looks like

Hugo is a adult mixed breed cat waiting at Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) in Germany.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hugo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hugo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hugo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hugo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hugo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hugo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hugo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
