Iara

Female · Young · 1 year

Iara was adopted as a puppy by her family from Portugal and now given up to us due to changed living circumstances and a move. The young sheepdog is currently still quite nervous, excitable, and completely lost on walks and in contact with other dogs. Her only "safe space" are her caregivers, which has led her to want to claim them for herself and keep dog and person away from "her" people. Typical of insecure sheepdogs, Iara tries to chase away anything that moves too fast, is unknown or scary with loud barking. With regular training with her caregivers, she has made great progress and now masters most environmental stimuli without much drama. With familiar people, Iara is incredibly loving, affectionate, and playful, although sometimes a bit stormy. Her main caregivers are her anchor and help her relax completely, which is why she naturally enjoys spending a lot of time with her humans. Since she is housed in a mixed group of experienced, socially stable dogs, her social behavior with conspecifics has improved dramatically and she now approaches strange dogs curiously and more calmly. With her WG buddies, the "little" mouse is now running wild over the meadow and loves their company. A (or several) stable first dog would certainly make it easier for Iara to find her place in the scary big world. For this little rough diamond, you need a good dose of experience, patience, and above all a lot of calmness and composure to bring out the full potential of this great female dog. About Iara

What life with Iara looks like

Iara is a extra-large young adult dog waiting at Tierschutzverein für Tirol in Innsbruck.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Iara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Iara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein für Tirol handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Iara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Iara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein für Tirol will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Iara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Iara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein für Tirol early rather than rehoming privately; they know Iara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
