Update January 2026 Ida, a Pyrenäenberghündin (possibly a mix), was born on October 11, 2018. Ida is neutered, enjoys moving around, and is interested in everything that is exciting and new. She has been to the North Sea several times with me, and we have also gone on forest walks in the Bergisches with friends. Ida could be more relaxed in dog encounters; she is very impulsive in many situations. Her 45 kg must be securely led, but it should not be a problem for a confident and strong handler. She was never problematic with us! The issues that led to her return in the past are more evident in her family environment. Ida does not appreciate strangers coming into her home, and this needs to be well controlled. Initially, this cannot be without a muzzle, which is why she can only be given to experienced people. She is not incompatible with other dogs in everyday interactions, but her home demands her attention. She seems to ignore cats. Ida is a strong, self-assured dog, very freedom-loving, and not bulletproof. Loud gun changes during hunting trials cause her to lose her composure completely, and she will find any way out, which means that an unsafely secured garden will be left immediately in such situations. She is very creative. Those who can offer all this and deal with Ida's characteristics will experience a devoted female dog who will always be at her person's side.**************************************************************************************Update August 2025 Ida, born on October 11, 2018, neutered, and a very athletic Pyrenäenberghündin (possibly a mix), has been with us for several years. I have already tried several times to place her with experienced handlers. Ida is a very self-assured female dog who immediately understands where she can assert herself.

About Maja

What life with Maja looks like

Maja is a senior dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Hortus Animalis in Freren.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Maja, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Maja?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Hortus Animalis handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Maja on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Maja if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Hortus Animalis will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Maja already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Maja isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Hortus Animalis early rather than rehoming privately; they know Maja and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
