Ilan

Male · Senior · 10 years

Ilan, whose name in Hebrew means "growing tree," is a male dog of the Deutscher Saupacker type, born in May 2016 and (chemically) neutered. With his body weight of around 60 kg and his impressive appearance, he is a typical representative of the molosser breeds: calm, self-assured, watchful, and very clear in his behavior. Ilan was found severely emaciated and abandoned, tied to a tree. Currently, Ilan lives in a foster home in a structured, dog-experienced environment. There, he shares his home without any problems with a dog-experienced cat, a five-year-old child, and has regular contact with a ten-year-old female dog. Toward his trusted people, Ilan is extremely clingy and cuddly. He actively seeks closeness and prefers to be with or right next to his human. At the same time, he brings a pronounced vigilance and reliably defends the house and property. He would also protect his humans if given this responsibility—hence it is particularly important that his future owners consciously take on leadership and set clear boundaries. On the leash, Ilan shows situational aggression when meeting other dogs but can be easily addressed and stopped. His leash skills have already improved significantly but still have room for improvement. Generally, he gets along well with other dogs, especially medium to large ones, where sympathy and character play a decisive role. Ilan does not show resource guarding behavior towards food, toys, or resting places. True to his breed, Ilan is stubborn and likes to question commands—not through action, but through consistent inaction and very convincing "sitting out." If he does not receive clear orientation, he takes over leadership independently and naturally. Especially in the dark, he shows a significantly increased vigilance and actively scans his surroundings. His prey drive is moderately pronounced.

Lange Spa

About Ilan

What life with Ilan looks like

Ilan is a medium-sized senior dog waiting at Tierheim Ludwigshafen in Ludwigshafen/Rheim.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ilan, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ilan?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Ludwigshafen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ilan on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ilan if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Ludwigshafen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ilan already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ilan isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Ludwigshafen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ilan and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
