Ivan

Male · Senior · 11 years

Anyone ever met a lion in an animal shelter...but a dog-like one? Although he got the name Ivan which many may associate with Ivan the Terrible, under no circumstances be fooled! When you take him for a walk you will quickly realize that despite his size, he is a real sissy. As soon as you start petting him, he immediately lies on his back, asking for a tummy rub, while bumping your feet at the same time. We don't know who taught him that, but you really have to see it with your own eyes! Ivan came to us after the intervention of firefighters who rescued him when he fell into a backyard water tank and couldn't get out on his own. Unfortunately, the guy had a deeply wounded leg from a wire - a wound that could not be stitched. For a long time he had to walk with a protective collar, and his hind part was shaved...so he looked almost like a real lion. Ivan is a big dog who doesn't cause any problems during walks. He loves exploring and sniffing - sometimes when he smells something interesting he can pull you towards it. In town, although still a bit unsure, he remains calm, can pass by cars, people, bicycles. In the kennel he lives alone, but during walks he does not show negative behavior towards other dogs. He is about 10 years old and weighs 30kg. He is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If you love large dogs and want to meet our lion, we invite you to the animal shelter in Choszczno every day between . Want to know more about Ivan? polski English Deutsch Czy ktoś spotkał kiedyś w schronisku lwa...ale takiego psiego? Uwielbia eksplorować i węszyć - czasami kiedy poczuje jakiś ciekawy zapach potrafi do niego pociągnąć. About Ivan

What life with Ivan looks like

Ivan is a large senior dog waiting at Schronisko Choszczno in Poland.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ivan, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ivan?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Choszczno handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ivan on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ivan if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Choszczno will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ivan already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ivan isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Choszczno early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ivan and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
