Ivar

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 15 years

Welcome Ivar. What a nice, stable guy this is. He is currently staying with us for a while and comes from a very stressful situation. We are more than satisfied with how he has come through it. They don't make him lukewarm. He is so lovely relaxed in his behavior. A nice dog with a very pleasant stable character. He is happy when he can go for a walk, likes to be cuddled. He is attentive when you ask for his attention. Well, there is some hunting instinct in him and you can see that he would like to sniff around everywhere (and that's perfectly fine). But yes, that's also part of his breed. We expect that he will be a top dog for the right, calm owner. Balanced, loyal, and very trainable (of course in a calm and respectful way). We do not place him with children under 15 years old. He doesn't do as well with them, and that will certainly also be related to a less pleasant experience with them. We want to support him in his search and are looking for a great home/owner for him. If you have serious interest and knowledge of the breed or other original types, please fill out the intake form. This guy deserves a nice place where he is understood. Ivar is a 2-year-old mixed breed Akita/Alaska Malamute.

Welkom Ivar. Screenshot

About Ivar

What life with Ivar looks like

Ivar is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at DOC Oldenzaal in Netherlands.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ivar, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ivar?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. DOC Oldenzaal handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ivar on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ivar if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — DOC Oldenzaal will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ivar already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ivar isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with DOC Oldenzaal early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ivar and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
