Jacko

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 8 years

Jacko landed at our shelter, as he had shown multiple instances of damaging bites, though not all incidents can be fully traced, as some were not reported to the authorities and thus not officially documented. It is known that he injured a man on the neighboring property, who had repeatedly thrown stones at him, and most recently, he injured a visitor to his owner’s home, without an apparent trigger. As a result, he was classified as potentially dangerous under the Saxon Dangerous Dog Act. We are looking for people with extensive experience to take in Jacko. Jacko – as far as we know, also due to his past – is very mistrustful of strangers and can quickly become aggressive. However, it makes a big difference whether he is in his familiar home environment, at our shelter in the enclosure, or outdoors. In the enclosure, Jacko becomes very agitated when he sees a new person, especially if someone stands still and stares at him. Outdoors, with a muzzle on, Jacko is more relaxed; people passing by do not interest him, but he still does not like it when a stranger stands still, looks at him, speaks to him, and invades his “comfort distance.” Whether this is more a forward-facing fear reaction or also a way to protect his primary caregiver is not easy to discern. Jacko needs time to get used to new people. Once Jacko has built trust, however, he is very cuddly and affectionate, enjoying being knuddled by “his person.” During walks, Jacko is well-behaved, he is not one of those dogs that become extremely excitable and then hard to handle, but he is also very independent – the impressions out there are more interesting to him than the end of the leash. This does not mean that he would not react to signals and try to go his own way. With other dogs, Jacko is only very conditionally compatible, especially with other, assertive male dogs, where he stands his ground, impresses, and displays the classic “leash bullying.” Jacko is not the kind of dog you fall in love with at first sight in the enclosure, but definitely a dog for a second look and a few more walks to recognize and appreciate his sensitive core. Anyone taking in Jacko will receive a very loyal friend, but also assumes responsibility, as his past cannot be erased. However, Jacko can learn to rely more on his primary caregiver, who can then make decisions for him, making cohabitation with him stress-free. We very much hope that Jacko will get this chance! The behavior in a family setting may therefore differ from the descriptions.

DE·Show original

About Jacko

What life with Jacko looks like

Jacko is a extra-large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Zwickau in Zwickau.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Jacko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Jacko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Zwickau handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Jacko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Jacko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Zwickau will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Jacko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Jacko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Zwickau early rather than rehoming privately; they know Jacko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
