Adopt James

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 4 years

James introduces himself first: Hello, I am James! I was born around 2022 and I am an Owtscharka-Mix – so a real bear of a dog. Together with my fellow sufferers Randy and Kooper, I came to the animal shelter after we were seized. At first, we landed in another animal shelter, but they weren’t very familiar with us there. It was even mentioned that the Ethics Commission should be involved – which would likely have meant that we wouldn’t have had a future anymore. I don’t even know what that word means… but the thought alone sends a cold shiver down my spine. 🥺 Fortunately, Britti came to our rescue and gave us a second chance. By now, I have settled in quite well here. While I am still skeptical of strangers and need some time to trust people, Randy realized that the people here really mean well by us and was even allowed to move into his new home. I am a bit more cautious. As a herding dog, I am a good lookout – even though I haven’t had much experience with actual herding yet. For my future home, I wish for a family connection and a large garden where I can devote myself with full dedication. If you are looking for a loyal, strong, and characterful companion who will give you his heart after an adjustment period – then I might be the perfect match for you. Owtscharka-Mix James was born around the beginning of 2022 and is unneutered. James came to us together with Randy and Kooper in a seizure. Since the responsible colleagues were not equipped for these dogs, the Ethics Commission threatened to be involved, which would have meant euthanasia. Therefore, we took in the three dogs in a catastrophic state, and we are even happier that Randy has found his own new home in the meantime. As you can see from the following update, Britta’s concept with love and understanding is working again! – Have fun checking out 😉 James shows typical herding dog traits, so is initially very distant towards strangers. But James only needs a short time to warm up to someone. Once that’s achieved, James becomes totally cuddly and has fun learning new things. It has been found that James is an allergen. Therefore, James would like to be able to use the opportunity to be outside as well as be with his person. Character-wise, James is perfect and enjoys walks. /* Clearfix for container */ .gallery1:after { content: ''; display: block; clear: both; } /* Two Column Layout */ /* Three Column Layout */ .b-link-stroke .b-link-stroke .slgf_home_portfolio_caption h3 { color: ; } James Zoom Zoom Zoom Zoom Zoom Zoom Zoom Zoom Zoom Zoom

About James

What life with James looks like

James is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Hassberge in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting James, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about James?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hassberge handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw James on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt James if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hassberge will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is James already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if James isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hassberge early rather than rehoming privately; they know James and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
