Japanische Legewachteln

Unknown · 1 year

We are Japanische Legewachteln – fascinating and lively birds who show a lot of personality despite our small size. We like to live in small groups and spend our day scratching, dust bathing, and communicating quietly among ourselves. We are looking for a new, responsible home where we can live in a humane manner. For good husbandry, we need a spacious structured aviary or a cage with a protected interior area. The floor space should not fall below 2 m² for a small group, and of course, more space for additional birds. An important requirement is a dry, well-ventilated, and protected location with sufficient hiding and retreat possibilities, such as through branches, roots, plants, or small houses. Japanische Legewachteln can be kept in outdoor aviaries with a shelter or in indoor aviaries, as long as they get enough space, daylight, and fresh air. In the cold season, they need a frost-free, well-insulated area, as they are sensitive to cold and dampness. We are fed with seed food, supplemented with green food, herbs, insects, or egg food for mental stimulation and nutrient supply. A bowl with fine sand or bath sand for dust bathing must not be missing, as it serves feather care and well-being. Although we are not cuddly pets, those who meet us with attention will be rewarded with exciting behavioral observations, quiet sounds, and our own character. The bird population at the animal shelter changes regularly. So please ask if Japanese Leghorns are currently being rehomed. If you are interested in Japanese Leghens or can offer a suitable home, please feel free to contact us.

About Japanische Legewachteln

What life with Japanische Legewachteln looks like

Japanische Legewachteln is a large adult bird waiting at Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg in Berlin.

Birds are long-lived, social, and noisy. The species and individual history matter enormously — ex-companion parrots can carry strong attachments and trauma. Ask the shelter about their daily routine, diet, and whether they'd do best alone or with a flockmate.

Note from the shelter: Requires specialized aviary setup with minimum 2m² floor space, frost-free shelter, predator protection, and specific diet including grain feed, greens, and sand bathing facilities

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Japanische Legewachteln, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Japanische Legewachteln?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Japanische Legewachteln on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Japanische Legewachteln if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Japanische Legewachteln already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most birds on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Japanische Legewachteln isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Japanische Legewachteln and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
