Jimmy

Mixed Breed · Female

Jimmy is a new arrival at our shelter - a rugged dog with sharp edges who forms very close bonds with his owners. However, they must be willing to accept and love him for who he is; he can also be further positively developed. Ideally, we are looking for a home for Jimmy with one or two people in a house with a garden. He is a dog that becomes vigilant at night and then wants to have his peace. Jimmy is not a dog you can fit into a mold, nor is he one who tolerates physical handling. The most important thing about him is to be careful when dealing with intrusive situations and respect his boundaries. From the type, Jimmy comes from an area (Tirol) where old German herding dogs are often crossed with guard dogs to obtain independent and vigilant dogs. This could also describe his origin. At first glance, he resembles a black Hovawart, and his nature is quite similar in many areas. Jimmy is not a city dog. A rural environment would be ideal for him. He loves being outdoors and is suitable for people who consciously want an independent and vigilant dog. In the dog boarding kennel, he also had contact with chickens - that was no problem at all for him. He shows good social skills when dealing with other dogs, but does not like to accept rule violations from other dogs. This means he gets along very well with social dogs over 20 kg, ideally a female. The individual case decides, but he is not averse to arguing with especially equal-sized males etc. He still likes to bark on the leash; this can be worked on. He definitely needs firm people. We will get to know Jimmy better in the coming weeks and will certainly be able to report more about him then. Currently, he first has to settle in with us so that we can also get to know him well and deal with him safely. Nevertheless, we are already looking forward to serious interested parties. To Jimmy's background is that he used to live with a family, mostly in an outbuilding with a garden. After there was a biting incident against his owner, he was given up. Since then, he has had some dog training and assessments by experienced dog trainers. Most recently, he was housed in a kennel where they worked intensively with him. There you could assess his behavior well and find out in which situations he reacts sensitively or critically. This knowledge now helps us to better understand Jimmy and find the right place for him. Interested parties are welcome to contact Mrs. Wink directly by e-mail.

About Jimmy

What life with Jimmy looks like

Jimmy is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Jimmy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Jimmy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Jimmy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Jimmy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Jimmy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Jimmy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Jimmy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
