Adopt Jinu

Male

Addendum from 20.04.26: Jinu and Derpy were temporarily removed from the homepage as suspicion rested on EC. Both rabbits are fortunately negative on the test and still desperately need a home. Jinu and his brother were dropped off with us for private reasons. Originally, the two were purchased from a breeder as "Dwarf rabbits." However, they now weigh over 3 kg each and clearly belong to the larger rabbit breeds rather than the dwarf breeds. Unfortunately, their size brings with it more than just one problem: Both are struggling with obesity, which is due to incorrect feeding. Since the day they arrived with us, they have been on a diet. Blood tests also showed alarming values indicating stress, obesity, and the onset of fatty liver. To stabilize their health sustainably and avoid complications, Derpy and Jinu still need consistent species-appropriate feeding – without dry food, treats, or high-sugar herb mixtures. With the right feeding and patience, they have a good chance of improving their blood test results and leading a healthy, long rabbit life. As Jinu is a buck, we also want to draw attention to an important topic: His drooping ears are unfortunately the result of targeted breeding and are considered a welfare issue. The limited ventilation of the ear canals can cause health problems – therefore, especially good ear care and regular ear checks are important. This animal was surrendered to the shelter.

About Jinu

What life with Jinu looks like

Jinu is a adult rabbit waiting at Tierheim Elmshorn in Elmshorn.

Rabbits are social animals — most shelters recommend adopting them in bonded pairs rather than alone. They need fresh hay daily, several hours of out-of-cage time, and rabbit-safe spaces to explore. They live eight to twelve years, longer than many people expect.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Jinu, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Jinu?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Elmshorn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Jinu on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Jinu if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Elmshorn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Jinu already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most rabbits on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Jinu isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Elmshorn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Jinu and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
