JOAQUIM

Male · Adult · 8 years

The JOAQUIM was found on the street in a lamentable condition. He was skeletal, hungry and dehydrated, practically hairless. He was scared, but at the same time very gentle and allowed us to handle him. He was diagnosed positive for leishmaniasis and with a bacterial skin infection, having received the appropriate treatment. He underwent treatment with Milteforam, which is the basic 4-week treatment for leishmaniasis. Currently he only needs to take one Alopurinol pill per day, a cheap and easy to administer medication. The skin infection was also treated with antibiotics and regular baths. The JOAQUIM is so gentle that he behaved beautifully during the bath and even enjoyed the care. After a few weeks the difference was noticeable: he gained 5 kg and will gain more. His fur started to grow and now he has beautiful white paws. He recovered brilliantly. The JOAQUIM is an extremely gentle and very sweet dog. He is shy with strangers, which is not surprising given the abandonment he suffered and the likely suffering caused by people. But with those he knows and trusts, he loves to receive affection. He gets along very well with other dogs, is kind and friendly. He walks well on a leash. He will be delivered vaccinated, dewormed, neutered and with a microchip.

PT·Show original

About JOAQUIM

What life with JOAQUIM looks like

JOAQUIM is a large adult dog waiting at O Cantinho da Milu in Lisbon.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Requires daily Allopurinol medication for leishmaniosis (treated and stable condition)

🇵🇹Adopting from Portugal

Portuguese rescues coordinate extensively with European rescue networks for cross-border placements, especially for galgos and podencos. Sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID are standard. Adoption fees typically cover the full vet workup.

Frequently asked

Adopting JOAQUIM, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about JOAQUIM?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. O Cantinho da Milu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw JOAQUIM on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt JOAQUIM if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — O Cantinho da Milu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is JOAQUIM already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if JOAQUIM isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with O Cantinho da Milu early rather than rehoming privately; they know JOAQUIM and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
