💛 Jochen – From a Miserable Heap to a Heart Dog When Jochen arrived at our shelter just a few months ago, he was nothing but a miserable heap. He barely moved, froze whenever someone tried to touch him—and the fear in his eyes was so profound it hurt to look at. 💔 We gave him time. Lots of time. And slowly, ever so slowly, Jochen began rediscovering the world. Today, he loves his walks, looks forward to seeing his caregiver, and has even gathered a small fan club here at the animal shelter. With familiar people, he shows joy and curiosity—but remains cautious, quiet, and watchful around strangers. Still, he doesn’t run away and would never bite. He calmly endures everything—as if he’s learned that patience is safer than fear. Jochen isn’t your typical fearful dog; rather, he’s one who has likely endured terrible experiences yet hasn’t given up. He’s intelligent, sensitive, and possesses a gentleness that touches the heart. Anyone who meets him immediately senses there’s something truly special about this little character. 🏠 We’re looking for a calm, peaceful home for Jochen, with patient, understanding people who have plenty of heart and tranquility. A small, securely fenced garden would be wonderful—loud apartment buildings or lots of commotion would overwhelm him. He gets along well with other dogs as long as they’re friendly. Cats likely wouldn’t be an issue either. He also copes well being left alone for a few hours. Jochen is a quiet hero—a dog who warms your heart and regains a little more trust each day. 🐾💛 🐕 Former shelter info: His health has improved dramatically: Jochen takes thyroid medication, his skin has cleared up beautifully, and although his gait is a bit unusual, he manages very well and thoroughly enjoys his walks. PROFILE Born: 01.06.2015 At animal shelter since: 06.09.25 Breed: mixed breed Sex: male Origin: ProDog Rumänien Reason for surrender: Rescue takeover Compatibility with cats / small animals: must be tested Good with children? Rather no Suitable as a second dog?

About Jochen

What life with Jochen looks like

Jochen is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Jochen, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Jochen?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Jochen on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Jochen if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Jochen already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Jochen isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Jochen and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
