Julian

European Shorthair · Male · Adult · 4 years

Julian is a 6-year-old tomcat. He was surrendered to us because the owner was no longer able to care for him. What immediately stands out when you meet Julian is that he has a weak back. He sinks quickly through his hind legs and is clearly not well-muscled. Medically, he has been thoroughly examined, including a CT scan. Nothing unusual came up. Why he walks exactly like this is not entirely clear to us. Fortunately, Julian is not too worried about his condition and really enjoys life. He climbs and jumps boldly everywhere. He loves cuddles and is always happy to be around us. He is always up for a brushing session and enjoys the attention he receives. However, Julian is somewhat shy; when visitors come, he is gone. He has nothing to do with new people. Also, children are too active for him. He gets along well with other cats, but he wants to be placed only with fellow cats who fully accept him as he is. Because of his disability, he is naturally a bit weaker. He loves being outside and enjoys the sunshine. We don't think it's wise for him to have the opportunity to go out on the street, but a fenced garden or large balcony would be very nice for him. Due to his disability, he sometimes has trouble using the litter box. He now has a very large one (which he really likes) and there are also boxes in other rooms for security. A new owner must take this into account. It must be thought through with Julian to ensure he can use the litter box properly. It is certainly possible that he will sometimes defecate or urinate next to the box. With our good guidance and his new owner, we want to help him get used to it properly. He really wants to be completely litter-trained. Julian is on a bladder diet.

NL·Show original

Julian krijgt blaasdieet.

About Julian

What life with Julian looks like

Julian is a large adult european shorthair cat waiting at Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden in Leiden.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Julian, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Julian?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Julian on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Julian if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Julian already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Julian isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden early rather than rehoming privately; they know Julian and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
